Ferruccio's first supercar

Ferrucio Lamborghini, the founder of the company in 1963, was a tractor manufacturer (all the best cars usually come from tractor tycoons?) One of his ambitions was to outdo Ferrari, another ambition was to build the best super car in the world, having owned many sports cars including Ferrari’s, he found fault with them all, “I can do better” he announced!

When Ferrucio Lamborghini went into the car business his birth sign Taurus the bull was adopted as the cars badge. Most of his cars were named in connection with bulls, but not this one. When Bertone saw the car for the first time, he uttered the word “Countach” the word is taken from a local dialect, it has no literal translation, no printable one anyway, the name stuck!

Although Ferruccio Lamborghini resisted all attempts by his young design team to persuade him to build a racer for the track, he was more than happy to give the go-ahead for a super sportscar for the road. The result was the Miura (fighting bull) built in 1966, the first V-12 mid-engined road car. It would be several years later before Enzo Ferrari built a 12 cylinder mid-engined road car. Even now nearly 30 years later the Miura is an amazing car, at the time of production it was a revelation. With a stunning Bertone body and 175 mph performance, it was the world’s most exotic car.
